GASTRONOMY
Oaxacan cuisine is one of the most varied and exquisite of Mexico. Walking through the cities and towns of the state, will be a pleasant surprise cross by market stalls. You will find Mole, Tlayudas, Tamales, Grasshoppers and these are accompanied with Chilacayota water, Tejate or a good Mezcal.
For dessert, there are many regional sweets and exotic ice creams, like rose petals.
The Oaxacan chocolate is also famous and you can drink it with “Pan de yema” (sugar-coated egg bread).
Markets:
• In Oaxaca City, on 20 de Noviembre market you can find in the section meat sales and roasted with re-hot coal. After a few minutes over the coals you have ready a good Oaxacan dried beef. Equally interesting are the markets; La Merced, Sánchez Pacuas and Pochotle wich is an organic market in Xochimilco on Fridays and Saturdays.
• Zaachila Market on Thursdays, Ocotlán Market on Fridays and Tlacolula Market on Sundays all of them approximately 30 Km. From Oaxaca City. On the road to Ocotlán you can also find San Bartolo Coyotepec known because its Black Pottery and San Martín Tilcajete because its Alebrijes.
• Tlacolula de Matamoros is located between Santa María el Tule (ancient big tree) and Mitla (the archeological site). You will be surprised by its folklore, it is the closest thing to a pre-Hispanic market times.
• Matatlán, cot mezcal. Know the cutting process, labored and baked leaves and finally pass to the juice through a double distillation and aged in barrels. Of course the tour is accompanied by tasting varieties that they produce.
